This website was created to complement “Lives of the South-West”, a multi-media art exhibition, which opened at the Up Next Gallery in James Lyng High School on December 21st, 2017. The show was conceived and created by students from the school’s 15 plus program. The exhibition combined personal stories, photographic portraits and large-scale murals representing four neighbourhoods in South-West Montreal, in an effort to highlight people’s deep connections to their communities.
In the process of creating the exhibition, students conducted more than twenty interviews and recorded their stories, edited audio, took photos of the storytellers in their communities, planned and painted murals, created promotional materials and helped create this website.
The 15 plus class is Wade, Dylan, Michael, Shadrach, Kayne and Sarha. The project was created in their entrepreneurship class under the direction of Nathan Gage. The class worked closely with artists Jimmy Baptiste and photographer and web designer Nicolas Hyatt (Design Eightie Trois). This project would not have been possible without the hard work and support of Mikaella Goldsmith, as well as the staff and administration at James Lyng High School.
